We get it. Africa is a continent with insane wildlife, top-notch luxury stays, mind-blowing landscapes, and bucket-list adventures. But how safe is it to travel to Africa, especially if you're part of the LGBTQ+ community? Below, we explain the basics of travel safety in Africa, highlighting our favourite luxury safari destinations.

South Africa
South Africa is one of the safest countries for the LGBTQ+ community. Being gay is legal, gay marriage is recognised, and discrimination based on sexual orientation is illegal.
Cape Town is a gay mecca with not only gay-only establishments but also gay-owned establishments. We call it our home, so trust us when we say the Mother City is all glitz and glam, bragging with scenic coastlines, stunning mountains, award-winning wines, and some of the best restaurants in the world.
While you're here, you might as well meet the Big 5 face-to-face in Kruger National Park. Many of our favourite luxury lodges are gay-owned and will go out of their way to ensure you have the time of your life while on safari in South Africa.

Tanzania and Kenya
It's illegal to be gay in Tanzania and Kenya, and gay marriages are not recognised either. However, gay tourists are welcome and let their hair down in designated tourist areas.
You can have your dream luxury African safari, especially witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration. While you’re here, hop on a hot air balloon. It’s super romantic. Plus, East Africa has many luxury lodges and hotels welcoming gay travellers, and our Travel Experts will make sure you feel at home.

Namibia
Homosexuality is not legal in Namibia, but it has been a gay-friendly tourist hotspot for many years. Local LGBTQ+ communities are growing, so you'll feel safe.
That being said, it's always advised to respect local laws, and we recommend going easy on public displays of affection. Many of our Travel Experts are part of the LGBTQ+ community, so we know exactly which gay-friendly lodges to book for you.

Rwanda
Homosexuality is legal in Rwanda, but the topic is still frowned upon. While locals might still face discrimination, as a tourist, you're exempt in designated tourist areas.
At your luxury lodge, you can be as lovey-dovey as you please. Rest assured that our Travel Experts will hand-select only the most gay-friendly lodges to ensure you're well cared for.

Botswana
Gay marriages are not recognised here. However, Botswana has always been welcoming to gay tourists, and they legalised homosexuality in 2019.
Even though this country is one of the top tourist attractions in Africa, you won’t see many other guests at your luxury lodge. Ultimate privacy is guaranteed, and you’ll feel safe exploring the Okavango Delta and all Botswana's other stunning landscapes.

Indian Ocean Islands
Homosexuality is legal in Madagascar, Mozambique, and the Seychelles. Even though it's illegal in Maldives, gay tourists are still welcome.
The rule of thumb is to always respect local laws and limit public displays of affection. Our Travel Experts have a long list of luxury accommodation options that are gay-friendly so you can relax and enjoy your partner’s company as you please. You can also partake in local activities like snorkelling, diving, going to the spa, lounging on the beach, and dancing the night away.
